We all know that gardening is a hard work. Its not easy to see your loads of money and hard work– all lost during a cold winter. Knowing what low temperatures your plants can withstand is the first step in protecting them from winter’s cold. A few simple techniques, too, will protect cold-sensitive plants when temperatures dip below expected level
1.
Care for your plants during the growing season with adequate irrigation, fertilization and pruning. Healthy plants better withstand the cold.
2.
Grow cold-sensitive plants in an area that is protected from cold winds. Along a wall, next to a windbreak and in the center of a garden are good locations to place these plants.
3.
Stop fertilizing plants in early fall, at least six weeks before the first frost. Tender new growth late in the season will not harden before cold weather arrives, making the plants vulnerable to winter damage.
4.
Apply 2 inches of mulch around your cold-sensitive woody plants. This helps protect the roots from getting too cold on nights with light freezes. Leave about 1 to 2 inches of space between the mulch and plant stems. For perennials that die back to the ground, cover the area with 2 inches of mulch.
5.
Water plants two or three days before an expected frost or freeze. Well-hydrated plant tissues are less susceptible to freezing. The water also helps insulate the soil.
6.
Shelter container plants from cold and wind. Place them grouped together in a garage or covered porch. Bring containers of tropical plants indoors for the winter.
7.
Cover plants when temperatures are expected to drop below their cold tolerance. This is often 28 degrees Fahrenheit when a light freeze occurs. Drape a flannel sheet or burlap covering over the foliage until it drops to the ground. If possible, use stakes or a chair to place over the plants before draping the cover so it does not touch the foliage. You can also cover small plants with an inverted container, such as a planting pot or plastic tub. Remove the covers in the morning and replace in the evening, if necessary.
