It has long been acknowledged that plants provide a variety of health and wellness benefits, including lowering stress, boost moods and purifying the air. So how does one choose which plant is best for their homes and life styles?
Some of the most important considerations are:
– How much light does my space get throughout the day?
– How much time am I looking to put in towards care?
– Are there any pets in the house that might chew or eat new houseplants?
Here are some of our top options for houseplants, both common and rare.
Spider Plant
One of the most popular hanging plant options, Spider plants sprout little “baby” plants, that can be repotted to make more. These low maintenance plants can stand a missed watering and are very effective at purify your air. They prefer a bright room, but no direct sunlight. And an extra tip, because these plants will stretch towards their light source, rotating the plant every few weeks, will encourage even growth.
Pilea Peperomioides
Known for its round, pancake like foliage, the Pilea is one of the most popular plants on the market these days. Not only are the round leaves incredibly photogenic, they are also a great source of insight into your plant’s well-being. For example, when a plant is not getting enough water, its usually flat discs will begin to curl under. Like the Spider Plant, the Pilea will produce babies that can be repotted, and shared, a great gift to fellow plant lovers.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
You may not know its name, but you have more than likely seen a Fiddle Leaf Fig in the last week. They are everywhere; on your favorite TV show, posted on Instagram, in every magazine. And rightfully so, they are stunning, with large glossy leaves and heights up to 8 feet and above, who wouldn’t want one? But are they going to work for your home? Fiddle Leaf Figs are slow growers, that prefer warm temperatures, bright, indirect light and very high humidity. An ideal spot for one, is near a bright window, with a sheer curtain to diffuse any direct light. If your house is not particularly humid, you can return some moisture with daily misting or keep a saucer of water near the plant.
Snake Plant / Mother-In-Law’s Tongue / Sanserveria
An oldie, but a goodie, the Snake Plant is one of the easiest plants to care for, and actually thrives on neglect. For those of you who have been known to forget to water, or are often taking longer vacations, this is the plant for you! But low maintenance isn’t the only thing this plant has to offer, it is one of the most effective air purifiers and has been linked to treating headaches, reducing allergy symptoms and increased energy levels.
