What is Valentine’s Day?

Valentines day, Also known as St. Valentine’s day. It is a one of a kind holiday that comes on February 14 when lovers express their affection towards each other with greetings and gifts. Given their similarities, it has been said that the holiday originated from the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I forbade the celebration of Lupercalia and is now attributed with replacing it with St. Valentine’s Day, but the true origin of the holiday is indefinite at best. Valentine’s Day was not supposed to be celebrated as a day of romance, but was made one in the 14th century.

Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day probably has you thinking of flowers, chocolate, and heart-eye emojis, but before you start crafting Valentine’s Day cards and searching for the best gifts for your Valentine, you might be wondering why we actually celebrate it. While it may be tempting to think of Valentine’s Day as a modern holiday meant just for yielding to our shopping and our sweet tooths, this day of romantic festivity actually has an ancient, fascinating story behind it.

In reality, nobody really knows the true history behind Valentine’s Day nor do any of the theories completely check out. Even historians find themselves arguing over the exact traditions from which the present day holiday takes inspiration. But we will tell you as much factual history we know about this storied holiday.

Whether or not Chaucer can be fully credited, it is true that he and fellow writer Shakespeare popularized the amorous associations surrounding the day. Soon, people began penning and exchanging love letters to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and by the early 1910s, an American company that would one day become Hallmark began distributing its more official “Valentine’s Day cards.” Flowers, candy, jewelry and much more followed, and the rest is ofcourse, history.
